Your Talents Glorify God
How is it that we reveal God through ourselves? For some it's through their very career choice, for others it's through volunteering time. It can be through the gifts we bring to the world and the goodness that comes from them, or even in our very actions of listening and lending advice. Each of us bring a piece of God to the world, as we are created in the image and likeness of God, with a purpose and talents which best show God's presence in us. The Saints each have special talents and things which they are known for, that makes them Saints, things that reveal God's love in the world. Today is the memorial of St. John Baptist de la Salle, and he was most known for helping the poor, and also starting schools of community learning, as opposed to individual education. Through doing this, he brings about the importance of community in faith and everyday life.
I know for myself, God works through me in my ability to sing and be musical, as He has given me a voice to share with others and bring them into a setting of worship. He also works in me through my ability to listen, truly listen to what people are saying and offer support and advice. We are each given talents and have things we're good at. Perhaps the challenge for us is figuring out what those gifts are, and further how to use them to bring about God's Kingdom on this world, in the things we do.
Today's Gospel states:'The Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, "I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of these do you stone me?" The Jews answered him, "It is not for a good work that we stone you but for blasphemy; because you, being a man, make yourself God." Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your law, `I said, you are gods'? If he called them gods to whom the word of God came (and scripture cannot be broken), do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, `You are blaspheming,' because I said, `I am the Son of God'? If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father." Again they tried to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands. He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John at first baptized, and there he remained. And many came to him; and they said, "John did no sign, but everything that John said about this man was true." And many believed in him there' (John 10:31-42). Jesus was doing the works of God, and for being 'like God' the people wanted him dead. Jesus shows us what it means to be active in our faith life, and show God's love through our very works. Take time today to think about how God is revealing Himself through you in the world.
Today's prayer comes from 'archwinnipeg' a prayer for using the gifts of the Holy Spirit:
God of love and of life, let us take time to look deep within ourselves and discover
the gifts you have blessed us with. May we take the time to direct our lives in a way that best uses our own unique combination of gifts. May our education help us discover where our strengths and interests lie. May our faith guide us in realizing our gifts. May we always be open to the direction of the Spirit and never forget the love you have for each of us.
Give us, O Lord, the perception we need to look within ourselves and discover the beauty and gifts we posses. Give us the courage to show others the talents they have. Help us serve others in the community and in so doing build up your kingdom. We ask this through Jesus, our Lord. Amen.
