Seek God in the Now
How often do we go out into the world seeking a sign from God? We pray to God about a certain situation, maybe discernment of a job, a relationship, the future. So much of the time, we ask God to show us a sign for moving forward. This could be feelings of good or bad in a certain decision. This could be getting into a job which will lead to a certain career path. This could even be a friend reaffirming a decision through words, inspired by God.How often though do we seek these signs, and keep waiting and waiting, wasting our lives hoping for proof that what we are doing is right? Instead, we could be out in the world, experiencing it and becoming a sign of God's love for others.
For me, being a University student, these recurring hopes for God's blessing in what I choose to do with my life come often. I have been deciding between youth ministry and teaching, going back and forth and searching for God's blessing. I'm sure you have had times like this is your life as well. What we need to realize, is that God is always working in us, and it is a constant plan in motion. Being human, we always want to know how the future will turn out, will we be happy if we make this decision. In living in this form of worry and yearning for wisdom, we don't focus enough on the now, but place so much on who we can become later. It is good to ask God to help us and reveal God's self to us, but we need to trust that God has a plan in motion for us, and that we can live our lives not worrying about signs, but focussed on living.
In today's Gospel we read:"When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, "This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah became a sign to the men of Nin'eveh, so will the Son of man be to this generation. The queen of the South will arise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. The men of Nin'eveh will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here" (Luke 11:29-32). Jesus' saving love for us is the sign for our future, and is the only sign we need to believe in for us to live a good happy life. The rest, we need to hope and trust that God is helping us through every decision we make.
Today's prayer comes from 'Catholic City' a prayer for trusting in God's Will:
O God, early in the morning I cry to you. Help me to pray and to concentrate my thoughts on you: I cannot do this alone. In me there is darkness, but with you there is light. I am lonely, but you do not leave me. I am feeble in heart, but with you there is help. I am restless, but with you there is peace. In me there is bitterness, but with you there is patience. I do not understand your ways, but you know the way for me... Restore me to liberty, and enable me so to live now that I may answer before you and before me. Lord, whatever this day may bring, your name be praised. Amen.
