Clean Me Lord
Have you ever had the experience of washing the counter in the kitchen as you're cleaning up from a meal, and then a few minutes later, you wash the same spot, even though it's already clean just from instinct and habit. A lot of the time, we are present in this situation with our sinful nature. Being humans, we have the tendency to do wrong and make mistakes, even when we know it's wrong and will feel guilty after the fact.
So much of the time, we walk around living our lives and just feel dirty, unclean, messed up hurt, and put on a brave face anyways as we go about routine. Do we call upon God to help us during these times of need, of hurt, to heal and help us, or do we put on a brave face and let the uncleanliness build up more and more until we develop the metaphorical stench of sin? At times such as these, it is important what we choose for our first step, and the right step, is through confessing to God everything that is wrong. Reconciliation is the only way that each of us can truly feel clean from the sinful nature of our lives, so why wouldn't we take this chance to be cleansed?
Today's Psalm states: "Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy steadfast love; according to thy abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in thy sight, so that thou art justified in thy sentence and blameless in thy judgment. For thou hast no delight in sacrifice; were I to give a burnt offering, thou wouldst not be pleased. The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise"(Psalms 51:3-6, 18-19). This is a good Psalm we can use to pray to God, and ask for healing, for cleansing in our lives and to prepare us for the great washing of love through Reconciliation. Only in God can we feel fully restored and be truly happy.
Today's prayer comes from 'Knowing Jesus', a prayer for a clean heart:
O Saviour of the world, God of Gods, light of light, you who are the brightness of your Father’s glory, the express image of his person; you who have destroyed the power of the devil, who have overcome death, “who sits at the right hand of the Father”; you will speedily come down in your Father’s glory to judge all men according to their works. Be my light and my peace; destroy the power of the devil in me, and make me a new creature. You who cast seven devils out of Mary Magdalene, cast out of my heart all corrupt affections.
You who raised Lazarus from the dead, raise me from the death of sin. You who cleansed the lepers, healed the sick, and gave sight to the blind, heal the diseases of my soul; open my eyes, and fix them singly on the prize of my high calling, and cleanse my heart from every desire but that of advancing your glory.Amen.
