Embrace the Embarrassment
Have you ever had a moment of complete embarassment? You literally wish you could curl up in the corner and hope everyone forgets about you. I'll admit, I'm a bit of a clumsy person, so those moments happen quite often. At work, I'll usually make a spill at least once or twice a day working with coffee, and not a minor one either. I'm talking full cup, all over the floor, splattering kind of spill. But, as these kimds of embarassing moments tend to happen quite often, you learn to live with them, embrace the clumsiness and minor shame for it, as part of who you are. Then you move on, and embrace life.
Looking at today's reading from Genesis, Adam and Eve face the same form of embarassment. We read:"Then the eyes of both of them were opened and they realised that they were naked. So they sewed fig-leaves together to make themselves loin-cloths. The man and his wife heard the sound of Yahweh God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from Yahweh God among the trees of the garden" (Genesis 3:7-8). In this passage, Adam and Eve had just eaten from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, the tree which God had forbidden them to eat. In doing so, their eyes were 'opened' to the possibility of hurt, and sin, and evil within the world. In result of eating, they realized that they were naked.
Now this is more than just nudity, without clothes. They realized what they had done in disobeying God, and were so ashamed that they felt they had to hide themselves away. Hide themselves from the one who was all good, all-loving, the very God who created them. We often take the form of Adam and Eve at this very moment. We feel completely burdened by the weight of our sins, the weight of our embarrassments in life, and tend to hide away, hide ourselves from God, trying to bury the shame. God is all-loving. God is all-knowing. God knows every breath you take, every thought you have ever had, or ever will make. There is no reason to hide. God loves you so much, that He sent His only Son, Jesus, to bare your sins on the cross, so that you can be saved. Never forget how special you are, and how loved you are in the eyes of God. There is nothing you could ever do that would make God love you any less. Embrace your humanity, your embarrassments,
Today's prayer comes from: 'Prayer Goddess', a prayer for overcoming shame:
Spirit of the Living God, be with me now in my hour of need. I affirm that I am One with Thee in this time of prayer. My soul expands to feel your very presence and power.
There are dark places in my Being, God. There are memories, circumstances, and scars that are unspeakable to me as I come before you. Heal my broken places, Dear God, and help me to feel my Wholeness. Bring me into the Light with You, God, and let me feel my fullness of Being as a Child of God.
I find release now through prayer and I claim all things are new for me. God sees me flawless and perfect now and always. I hold my head up high and know that I am a Good and Perfect child of God. As I do this, I am overcome with healing for any thoughts, people, memories or challenges that might keep me from my good, my peace and my joy in this life. Good follows as I walk with you God, and begin to understand my journey and the path I walk. I am here today, whole and free, because of all that came before me. I declare victory over my past and I begin anew, refreshed by you Love and by the unconditional acceptance of the Christ consciousness within me.
I know this is my Truth and I rush to meet my good. All is well in my soul. Amen.
