United We Stand

How do we treat people around us? I know sometimes I find it hard to conceal pride for living a Catholic life around those who know nothing really about faith. Sometimes it's hard to put ourselves at the same level as everyone around us. Do you remember how Jesus responded when he was criticized for eating with the poor and the tax collectors? These people cheated and were considered at 'lesser' standards than everyone else in society at the time, because they did not uphold the law and ways of purity.

Sometimes it's hard when you're in, for example, a work situation where the topic of faith comes up. Have you ever had it happen before where people start talking about their beliefs, and how they just 'don't go to Church', and then they laugh? I have. It's hard, but a faith filled life wasn't meant to be easy. At these points, we are to put ourselves at their level, look from their perspective, and try to sympathize, while also have the opportunity to share our faith. Not in a form of boasting or pride, but with humility.

In today's reading of Hebrews we read:" Let brotherly love continue.Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them; and those who are ill-treated, since you also are in the body.Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled; for God will judge the immoral and adulterous.Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, "I will never fail you nor forsake you."Hence we can confidently say, "The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid; what can man do to me?"Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God; consider the outcome of their life, and imitate their faith.Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever" (Hebrews 13: 1-8).

We are told to be equals with everyone, the poor, those in prison, in marriage, in wealth. In every area of our lives, we need to try to become equals and united, for only Christ is above us. We are all sinners, we are all wounded in some way. By putting ourselves at an equal standard and helping those around us, we become more like Christ.

Today's prayer comes from 'Knowing Jesus', a Prayer for Unity:

Dear Father God, I pray that You will help every member of the Church to live in harmony with each other. May we be united in love and enable us to pray with the mind of Christ, to be guided by the Spirit of God and to glorify You with heart and voice. Keep us from worldly ways, but rather may our lives be a witness of Your love, not only in what we say but in all that we do, I ask this for the sake of Jesus Christ, my Lord,
